Judo is a fantastic, enjoyable and fun sport!

New to Aylwin Judo Club? This page contains everything you need to know.

You may have practiced Judo in the past or you maybe a complete beginner. Please take a moment to read this page which contains all the information you need to be prepared for your training sessions at the Aylwin Judo Club. In fact, it contains over 150 years of the combined experience of the clubs instructors. We have sought to answer any and all questions you could think of and some you couldn't. By telling you here about all the things you MUST and MUST NOT do we hope to be able to devote our full attention, on the mat, to making each session as enjoyable as we can.

Your First Judo Session

Before You Arrive At The Club

Judo is a contact sport and for this reason personal hygene and cleanliness are of the utmost importance.
  • Your finger nails and toe nails MUST be short and clean.
  • You MUST be clean! In particular your hands, feet, hair and clothes worn on the mat MUST be clean.
  • You MUST be healthy enough to practice Judo. Most people are but if you are not sure then ask your Doctor.
For your first lesson arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start. (Times below)

Before You Step Onto The Mat

  • You will need to fill out and sign a Personal Details Form. If you are under 18 years of age your parent or guardian will need to sign it.
  • You will need to provide an Emergency Contact number. (Not the number of the person practicing Judo).
  • You will need to provide details of any relevant medical conditions that we need to be aware of. In particular, anything that might cause you to lose consciousness for no 'apparent' reason or allergic reactions to certain types of medication.
  • You will need to complete a licence application form.
  • Within 4 weeks you will need to complete a licence application form and pay the licence fee of £32.00 for Seniors and £27.00 Juniors.
  • The club pays for the very first lesson.
  • Visit the toilet and switch the mobile to silent or off as you will not be allowed to leave the mat during the lesson.

As You Step Onto The Mat

  • You must not wear anything that would cause injury to you or another person whilst on the mat. This includes earings, rings, piercings, hair slides etc.
  • For the actual training you should wear loose fitting clothes with empty pockets. (If available we will provide a suit for your first few lessons.)
  • Female players MUST wear a white T-Shirt under their Judo Suit Jacket.
  • Male players MUST NOT wear anything under their Judo Suit Jacket.
  • Long hair MUST be tied back and held in place with a plain elastic band.
  • Socks MUST NOT to be worn on the mat.
  • Footwear of any description is NOT allowed to be worn on the mat by anyone. Zori (sandals) should be removed as you step onto the mat and placed along the edge facing away from the edge.

Whilst On The Mat

  • Judo is a great sport derived from the martial art of Ju Jitsu. A high level of self discipline and self control is expected on the mat.
  • Should you feel unwell or experience pain for any reason you MUST tell the Instructor. (In particular, after vigorous excercise or maybe a clash of heads)
  • Listen carefully to the instructors and always work hard. After all, you are our next potential Black Belt

After Leaving The Mat

  • As with any new exercise regime you may experience some aching muscles the following day.
  • You MUST NEVER practice or demonstrate Judo off of the mat or outside of the club.
  • Tell us what you think!
Now, if you haven't already done so, go and fill out and sign a Personal Details Form.
